Hey guys, this is probably going to be my last blog post. So if you came here for information about your Santa Fe Saints athletics then you should probably be aware that I am not going to be posting anymore about them. Although if you want to stay updated with the teams you can go to santafesaints.com for anything (box scores and recaps). I will inform you on this last post about how the women’s basketball team is doing.
So, the lady saints are on a four game losing streak. All four of the last games that the ladies have played were on the road, so the ladies had to face a little adversity. They went to Miami last weekend and played Miami Dade College and Broward two teams they had already beaten before, but lost to both of them in which were really good match ups. Then the following weekend the lady saints traveled up to Georgia where they faced Darton State College and South Georgia Tech College. They lost to both of those teams, in which were also very good match ups. In either of the four games were the lady saints blown out or beaten by more then 10 points. There were minor mistakes that the ladies made and at crucial times.
This week the lady saints plan to make a come back. They have three games coming up that are being hosted at home. On Thursday, December 4th at 7:00p.m. , they play Pensacola State College. The following day Friday, December 5th at 8:00p.m. , they play Indian River State College, and then Saturday December 6th at 6:00p.m. they face Palm Beach. In order for the ladies to make a turn around this season they are going to have to show some pride, heart, hard work, and effort; and all of that begins in practice. So if your not busy at the end of this week please feel free to come check us out. We greatly appreciate the support, and be ready for a come back!
Hey guys, I want to tell you about this big panhandle game the lady saints just won. So, this past Tuesday November, 18 the lady saints got on the road traveling to Tallahassee to face Tallahassee Community College the lady eagles. This was a big game for the saints, because TCC is a panhandle team which means they are ranked really high, and also because they are great opponents. Besides that the lady saints had already been defeated by two other panhandle teams, in which they should have won, but anyways this was a big test for them.
The lady eagles came out warming up in their socks, they were all cocky, had their nose high in the air because being a panhandle team, they were also undefeated 5-0. They just knew in their heads they were way better than us, and that this game was going to be a cake walk. We had been preparing all week for this game, and was ready for whatever TCC had to throw at us.
The ball went up, we got jump ball, and the game begin. We started so slow and sluggish, while the lady eagles jumped out hot on us in the first half. We missed our first field goal attempt and they scored off of it. We were down 18-8 for the first five minutes of the first half. The lady eagles were so hot on our tails that they had us at a big double digit deficit at one point in time, but we didn’t give up. We kept pushing through the adversity and by half time we were only down by five.
In the second half we came back ready to play, we had our heads in the right place, and so we turned the defensive pressure up. We held the lady eagles to scoring only 25 points the second half, which led us to our five point victory over them. Kayla Lovett finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Deja Mcphee with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Sonya Franklin 12 points and 6 rebounds, Ashley Perry 10 points and 5 rebounds, and Tatiana Manuel 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 blocks.
Good Game Saints!
The men’s basketball team season has started off very well. Right now they have a 4-1(W-L) record. They have played some pretty stiff competition and has managed to come out with a win for almost every game so far. This past weekend they got on the road and traveled to Lake Worth, FL to face palm Beach state College and Broward College. The saints coasted by Palm Beach State College, winning by a 20 point deficit. They were led by Morris Marshall who had 22 points and 3 assists. He was closely followed by Allen Baez, who had 17 points. To contribute to the saints win was Andre Horne and Vosean Crumbie, Horne had 11 points and Crumbie had 10 points. The next day the saints faced Broward College, which wasn’t a average walk in the park!
The saints lost a close battle to Broward with the end score being 82-79. Although the saints had five players each scoring in double figures, they were no match for Broward college. Broward’s Deandre Turner had 31 points leading to their victory over the saints. From this lost the head men’s coach said, ” We played well over the final 10 minutes of the first half and for about eight or nine minutes of the second half. We will learn from this and learn to play better for 40 minutes”. I totally agree, this is something both the men and women’s basketball team needs to work on, playing all 40 minutes!
The saints will continue to get better and progress as the season continues. They play again this Friday, November 14 against Palm Beach State College. The match will begin at 7:00p.m. and it will be home here in Gainesville. So if you are not busy and do not have any plans please feel free to come out and cheer on your Santa Fe Saints.
If you did not get to enjoy all of the festivities with the saints over the Halloween weekend, do not panic, it is fine because I am here to catch you up with what happened.
Boo at the zoo was a total success! We had lots and lots of kids come out to trick or treat and see the animals. There were all kinds of cute little costumes, from penguins to superheroes. The smile on those kids face warmed my heart! Not only did we have kids come to boo at the zoo, we also had some of our adult Santa Fe college students to join us. Who said that its an age limit on trick-or-treating and dressing up in costumes.
The Santa Fe saints men and women’s team also had a very successful weekend. Both the men and women’s team went undefeated. On Friday October, 31 both teams had astonishing wins over their opponent. The men team won their match up against Impact Academy 85-57, followed by the women’s team winning their match up against IMG 85-65. The men team was led in scoring by Morris Marshall with 24 points. Morris Marshall, a sophomore for Santa Fe picked right up from where he left off last year. He is presumed to put up numbers for Santa Fe, and lead them to a Mid-Florida State Conference Championship.
The women’s basketball team with a similar outcome as the men was led in scoring by returning Gainesville High athlete, Deja Mcphee, she had 17 points. With the help of her team mates myself(Sonya Franklin), Kayla Lovett, Brianca Roberts, and Tatyiana Manuel pitching in 9 points a piece, the Lady Saints came out on top with a big W as their season opener.
This coming up weekend both teams will be getting on the road to face some pretty stiff competition. We ask that everyone wish these young men and women luck and to have a safe trip. Thank You!
